Comparison and contrast in essay writing is commonly expected when you involve at least two subjects that offer several possibilities of explanation. In the compare and contrast scenario, there is a posing problem in the focus of your essay. Knowing that in the compare-contrast situation you are involving two or multiple subjects, where are you going to focus your essay? Another consideration is whether you will deal with the similarities, the differences or you will cover both on the subjects of the essay. For example: The Use of Signs and Symbols In the example above, what method are you going to use if you write an essay? Are you going to tell its similarities, differences or both? If you choose either, how will you focus it in your essay? Thus, you must clarify your point at the start of your essay or at every topic sentence in the paragraph of your essay. For example, it could be that your first paragraph tells about the differences in the use of signs and symbols by stating: The differences between a sign and a symbol are… The other consideration in the compare and contrast method is the focus of concern in your essay. Given that there are multiple subjects in your essay, which among these are you going to focus? If you want to focus on multiple subjects, then give a cue of your ideas in the topic sentence of the paragraph. This is one of the simplest ways of making clear points in your essays. When you want to present your ideas on all sides of the subject, jot down your ideas for the essay. Enumerate all your ideas for the first subject, then the second and so on. This is how you balance your points in the essay. Finally, if you have presented all your points in the paragraph, the last paragraph should give a fitting closure to your essay. Thus, pertinent questions to ask could be: Are there points that you are in favour of? Or do you just leave other people to give their own judgment in the essay?
