dream interpretation 101 understanding water in dreams
Dreams are messages that come from the subconscious mind in the form of pictures, which reflect the state of the dreamer’s state of mind. Dreams act as a metaphor, giving a picture representation of what is occurring within the mind. Whenever a prominent image in a dream appears, considering its function in waking life can illuminate its interpretation. It’s common knowledge that water comprises 60% to 70% of the human body. According to Dr. Batmanghledg’s book Your Body’s Many Cries for Water, the level of hydration in the body effects metabolism, energy levels, and the immune system’s performance. It is essential for the body to function optimally. When water appears in dreams, it reflects the dreamer’s relationship to something that is essential for the dreamer’s consciousness to progress. Just as our bodies need water, the mind needs experiences for mental development. Therefore, water in a dream represents conscious life experience. Let’s take a look at some common dreams that involve water. Dream interpretation of drowning in water This is a common nightmare, which mirrors the feeling of being overwhelmed by stressful situations in waking life. Think of the times that you’ve been “in over your head.” Whether that’s drowning in paperwork or cramming for that final examination, the apparent lack of breathing room or feeling powerless over situations beyond your control can feel like you’re drowning in water. As with other dreams, you can use this as a stimulus to take a step back and seek an objective point of view with the situation at hand. Situations in of themselves are neutral. How we view them can make the difference in our ability to reason and respond with grace. Dream interpretation of swimming While drowning shows feeling overwhelmed, being able to swim in water indicates a level of control when working with life’s situations. Your level of control while swimming, ability to change direction, float, and dive are all factors to consider. Some dreamers report being able to breathe underwater in their dreams. This signifies the dreamer’s ability to completely immerse themselves in their experiences, which can lead to greater understanding and wisdom. Assessing the qualities of water While the above examples take into account the dreamer’s level of reaction or response to life’s experiences, the infinite forms of water can also be considered for dream interpretation. We’ll use ice as an example. In it’s natural state, water is able to take on any form, fill any container, and flow as needed. However, in its solid state as ice, it loses its malleability. Whenever ice appears in a dream, look for ways that experiences have to become seemingly immovable or stagnate. Breathe life into your creations with creativity and imagination and look for that third option, allowing the ice to become water once again. While dream interpretation can provide great insight, applying the dream messages will provide the greatest reward. Be like a scientist. Journal your experiences throughout the day and see how your dreams reflect them. Develop a curiosity with dream interpretation, for it can lead to knowing yourself in greater ways.
