gamsat essay the art of writing a good introductioniii

Posted by admin, April 23rd, 2011

In an earlier article we told you about the “personal example hook”, which can be an effective way of commencing your GAMSAT essay . But this may not always be the best way to begin your GAMSAT essay, or, alternatively, you may not always be able to think of a relevant personal example for a particular topic. Rest assured that there are many other “hooks” that you can use for beginning your essay in an effective manner and catch the reader’s attention. One such “hook” is the use of an appropriate, relevant quotation or proverb. The GAMSAT writing section, as you well know, consists of two sets of five quotations each. Thus, you are already provided with a group of five quotations, one or more of which you have to choose as a point of departure for your essay. In this scenario, you need to be rather careful in deciding whether it would be prudent to use a new quotation of your own as a hook. Let’s suppose you are given the following set of quotations: [This is taken from ACER’s GAMSAT Practice Test- Green Book] * I can usually judge a fellow by what he laughs at. (Wilson Mizner) * You grow up the day you have your first real laugh- at yourself. (Ethel Barrymore) * Perhaps I know why it is man alone who laughs: He alone suffers so deeply that he had to invent laughter. (Nietzsche) * Against the assault of laughter, nothing can stand. (Mark Twain) * In the end, everything is a gag. (Charlie Chaplin) Each of the above quotations is a unique take on laughter, but while laughter is the common theme in all the quotations, it is perhaps better to build your essay on any one of these quotations, because each quotation has a different point of view and you cannot possibly do justice to all the points of view in one essay of about 300 words (We will devote a separate series of writing on the optimum number of words that you should aim to write in the GAMSAT essay). You will realize that while some quotations are realistic (You grow up the day you have your first real laugh- at yourself), some are philosophical (Perhaps I know why it is man alone who laughs: He alone suffers so deeply that he had to invent laughter), others may be judgmental (I can usually judge a fellow by what he laughs at) or even existential (In the end, everything is a gag). It is best for you to choose that quotation which you can relate to the most. You will usually find yourself agreeing or disagreeing quite strongly to one or more of these quotes. You need to take a minute or two to decide which of these would you like to argue for/against and then embark on your writing task. Let’s suppose that you choose to write on Nietzsche’s quote- “Perhaps I know why it is man alone who laughs: He alone suffers so deeply that he had to invent laughter”. Now, this is a rather philosophical take on laughter. Given below is a probable introduction that develops Nietzsche’s point of view that man’s laughter is prompted by his suffering. [Note how the introduction begins with a quotation (which is the hook in this case) and moves on through the transition to the final thesis-statement which comes at the end of the introduction]: Noted Physicists and Nobel Prize winner Neils Bohr once said “There are some things so serious you have to laugh at them.” Laughter has undergone a radical change in meaning and signification over the years. With the advent of the so called “modernity”, man is increasingly burdened with existential concerns about his very being and this has come to be reflected in the way he “sees/reads” laughter. From being a social corrective that mocked social/ moral transgressors, the concept of laughter has travelled through time to attain a therapeutic function today. Paradoxical, though, as it may seem, we do realize that the human condition is indeed so full of anguish, so full of suffering that only the power of being able to laugh at ourself bails us out, not as an amusement, but as protest, a contemptuous protest registered against the very condition of suffering and sorrow that is fundamental to man’s existence. And this is perhaps why Nietzsche was prompted to declare, “Perhaps I know why it is man alone who laughs: He alone suffers so deeply that he had to invent laughter”. This kind of a potent introduction paves the way for a powerful argument in the body of your GAMSAT essay and ensures a compelling read. So start practicing today and brace yourself for some power-writing in the next GAMSAT!

Finding the right tutor is the extremely important. There are many things to consider and the decision should be made after careful consideration. You have two main options for tutoring in Melbourne. The first is to opt for private tutors and the second option is commercial learning academies or centres. Whether it’s English tutoring in Melbourne or one that teaches the piano, here are a few things to keep in mind while finding the right tutor. There are many reasons why you may need a tutor. It can be subject specific, where your child gets helps if he is weak in Maths, Geography or other subjects. You may need a tutor to coach your child for a special scholarship exam or simply to help him perform better and cope with exams. Hiring a tutor is quite common for the VCE exams as well. The Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) is the certificate that the majority of students in Victoria receive on the completion of their secondary education. Also, there are many examinations and common entrance tests to enable students to join the police, special government services, the armed forces or nursing careers and to new secondary colleges. It is a good idea to hire a tutor who can help children with these exams. The best way to find tutors is by advertisements in local papers or by references. Those long PTA meetings have to come in handy sometime! Ask mothers or even teachers to recommend someone. Talk to the children and ask them about the tutor, you can then gauge for yourself if he can gel well with your child. When you meet the prospective tutors, talk to them and judge for yourself. If you get a good vibe and think he will be able to gel well with your child, set a time and payment schedule with the tutor. If you think that a learning academy is a better bet for your child, then make sure the academy has qualified staff that will take care of your child’s needs. Try and make sure that the learning centre is close to home or at least easy to get to, making it easy for your children to commute. It is very important to monitor your child’s progress so you know if the tutor is helping your child. If you are hiring a maths tutor in Melbourne, ask yourself these questions: • What are his qualifications? • What is his experience with tutoring or teaching? • Is he adept with the syllabus? • What is his plan of action or methodology? some piano teacher resources for unmotivated music students

Posted by admin, April 20th, 2011

Are you a piano teacher who wants to put your teaching experience to the next level through some innovative piano teacher resources available online? Well, read on and see how you can make your unmotivated students attain the kind of interest and satisfaction they need. Motivation in the classroom requires the right skills, attitudes, experiences and techniques; as a music educator, you need to come up with various innovative and creative activities to make most, if not all your students, focused, determined, motivated and enthusiastic from the beginning to the end of a music class or piano lesson session. Generally, the term motivation is associated with human beings; thus, this is theoretically used to describe the causes of their behavior or attitude as well as some psychological, intellectual and emotional conflicts and issues. Technically, motivation is the activation or foundation of goal-oriented behavior. This has two major categories: the extrinsic and the intrinsic motivation. To begin with, intrinsic motivation comes from rewards the students they get from the tasks or the activities themselves. This form of motivation has been associated with high educational achievement, enjoyment and satisfaction. In line with this, students are believed to be intrinsically motivated if they accredit their performance and educational outcome to internal factors, if they believe that they can meet their goals at their own pace and capability, and if they are interested in learning music or any subjects in different perspective, usually through new and innovative ways. On the other hand, extrinsic motivation is associated with external factors that can help the students be motivated and stay focused. Some of these external factors are the rewards or incentives themselves such as the bonus points, little yet special items, ribbons, certificates, trophies, medals and a lot more. With this regard, below are some points that piano teachers like you can take into considerations as you intend to motivate all your students and make them understand music more. Integrate technology in the learning process. Music may seem complex or difficult to many students as not all of them ay have the passion and the interest to learning and understanding such. Yet, as their music teacher, you need to adopt some innovative and inventive piano teacher resources to help them attain the kind of motivation they need. With the kind of students we have right now, they can appreciate their lessons more if technology has been playing a very good part on it. Since they are up to some educational innovations, piano teaching software and websites may be helpful to you and your students. Harmonize their innate and natural talents with their interests that motivate. Natural talent creates motivation, motivation creates persistence and persistence gets the job done. These things are interrelated and must be properly observed and maintained inside the classroom to make it more conducive for learning music. Take some risks and make them realize the advantage of learning how to handle failures and adverse effects. Failure and bouncing back are elements of motivation. Failure is a learning tool. No one has ever succeeded at anything worthwhile without a string of failures. So, let them try new things and trends out so as to keep them aware and expose to reality. Driving our students in piano and music to real classroom motivation can be both challenging and rewarding. Whatever you do, just always remember that you are to touch their lives

welding basic information

Posted by admin, April 19th, 2011

Welding is a process using heat or pressure to join together materials such as metal or plastic. This is a common way to join metals, and is used in the production of many goods, including automobiles, ships, trains, buildings, and bridges. Though similar to the acts of soldering and brazing, welding is distinguished from these other methods in that a weld melts the metals together, while soldering introduces a softer substance that is melted and then used to hold the original pieces together without actually melting them. Welding has developed greatly since its conception thousands of years ago. Thanks to modern technologies, welders work with much greater precision and weld stronger welds than in the pre-19th century, when forge welding was the only technology and metals were welded by blacksmiths beating them together over hot coals. The first World War created a surge forward in welding technologies, as the many countries looked into better and more efficient ways of welding ships and planes for the war. As welding technology has increased, welding as become more robust and can now be performed by hand or automated by machines and even robots. Welding can be performed in a variety of environments, including under water, and welding equipment can be very portable. Despite these advances, welding remains dangerous, with risk to the welder of burns, exposure to poisonous gases and eye damage. Today some of the more common methods of welding include gas welding, arc welding, resistance welding, spot welding, electron beam welding, laser welding, and robot welding. Gas welding, properly called “oxy-fuel welding,” and commonly referred to as “oxyacetylene welding,” is a process in which gas an oxygen are mixed to produce a high enough temperature at the torch to melt the edges of the metal being worked with. Thus oxy-fuel welding typically requires two tanks, one of oxygen, and another for the fuel being used. This is one of the oldest techniques for welding, and is still commonly used, in part because the equipment is easily portable. It is no longer commonly used in industrial welding, but is still often used for basic welds such as welding pipes together. Arc welding is performed by creating an arc of electrical current between an electrode and the material being welded so as to attach the materials by melting them together. Arc welding is commonly used in industrial applications because of its low cost. A common problem with arc welds is that the oxygen and nitrogen in the atmosphere can cause welds to be brittle and weak. This is overcome by introducing shielding gasses such as hydrogen, argon, and helium. Resistance welding uses physical pressure combined with heat produced by the resistance of electrical current passing through the materials being welded. Resistance welding melts just enough of the materials to join them together when they are put under physical pressure. This method is popular because it is easily automated and economical at a high rate of production, though initial equipment cost can make this method cost prohibitive at lower production rates. Spot welding is a specialized form of resistance welding (see above) used to join up to four sheets of metal together. In spot welding two electrodes are used to clamp metal sheets, applying pressure and passing current through them. This method is easily automated and energy effiecient, making it popular for industrial applications, particularly in automotive assembly. Electron beam welding bombards the materials being welded with a beam of high velocity electrons, the impact of which produces heat, melting the materials and welding them together. The electrons are produced by heating a hot cathode emitter made of tungsten. This method is very precise, and used in the production of aerospace and semiconductor parts. Laser beam welding makes use of a laser to join multiple pieces of metal together via its concentrated heat source. This method is both precise and powerful, with little heat escaping the specific welding zone, and the laser able to send heat deep into the metals welded. Laser beam welding is commonly automated and used in industrial applications such as automotive assembly. Robot welding does not employ a different welding technique, but is distinct because of its level of automation. Robot welding is the latest technology in welding automation, and is able to perform all steps in welding, including the preparation and handling of materials. This is what sets robot welding apart from automated welding, in which a human operator is still required to prepare materials and run the automated machines. Robot welding is used in high volume production operations, such as automobile assembly.

the history of the potters wheel

THE HISTORY OF THE POTTER’S WHEEL Like many other ancient tools, the history of the potter’s wheel is based primarily on remnants of the past and resulting assumptions. It’s gradual development is thought to have started around 3000 BC but there is some evidence that it may have begun even as early as 8,000 BC. Earliest discoveries were from Mesopotamia (now southern Iraq) and told the tale of people moving away from the use of heavy stone containers, animal skin pouches and leaky baskets to clay pots to hold liquids. The first pots were built with coils of clay stacked on top of each other, smoothed with a simple tool of wood or leather and decorated by the potter. The pots were then allowed to dry and buried in a fire pit to harden. The potter found that by turning the platform on which the coils were placed - usually a leaf or stone - the coils could be added more easily. Soon after this discovery, a small turntable was developed to set the clay on and speed up the coil work. The practice of coil-building still exists in many village pottery shops as well as in the shops of modern-day potters who prefer this form of molding clay pieces. By 3000 BC, the population had grown and with it an increased need for pottery. The women, who were thought to have been delegated that task in the early stages, returned to the primary task of child-rearing and the pottery-making was taken over by the men. In 2500 BC, pictures by the Egyptians show men at a pottery wheel that they are turning by hand. They continued to build with coils until a faster, heavier wheel was developed. They were then able to throw the clay onto the middle of the wheel and form it into a more controlled shape. The regularity of shapes and the use of a spiral design were outcomes of this new procedure. The wheel was turned with a large stick or kicked by the potters foot on a circular platform attached to the wheel. Sometimes, the process required two men to turn the wheel and work the clay. The potter’s wheel of today is lightweight, faster and much more controllable. It requires only one set of hands. Even though our dishes and bowls are mass produced from every material possible, the simple elegance of hand-thrown pottery remains a treasured possession. MLC
